Traffic Series No.4: Pedestrians – Trg Republike (Ljubljana)

This piece is part of a collaborational project called Traffic Series, where each contrubution is based on the idea of using traffic (wether car, pedestrian, water or air traffic) as source of informations to determine the placement of sound events within time. Specifically, Traffic Series No.4: Pedestrians is based on pedestrians moving; each performer draw an imaginary or physical line on the ground and every time someone cross that line he/she plays an unsustained sound. For the occasion we prepared a specific setting based on the space and acoustic properties of Trg Republike in Ljubljana. The wide and loud echo has been exploited using only sharp, muted snare drum sounds, so that the effect is extremely dry in the center of the square (where we performed in shape of square) and then getting back very clearly and louder. The piece aims to create a sonic situation based on a contingential phenomena, neither predictable nor controllable from the performers, as an investigation of non-arbitrary ways to organize events in time. This “out of hands” approach is futher developed basing the details of the piece on the specific location.
